The Anaesthetic Department is part of the Anaesthetics, Critical Care & Theatres Directorate and is based across the 2 main District General Hospitals; Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.
These hospitals provide acute emergency and elective medical and surgical services – via 16 operating theatres, for ENT Surgery, General Surgery including vascular, breast, Upper and Lower GI surgery, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and Urology. In addition to this, Acute & Chronic Pain Services, Anaesthetic Pre-Assessment services, Intensive Care and Coronary Care, consultant-led obstetrics services, via separate obstetric theatres, Special Care Baby Unit, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, inpatient consultant-led paediatric medicine and Accident & Emergency units are currently available. The department is also an integral part of the Health Board’s Resuscitation Service, with a number of anaesthetic consultants having instructor status.
The Welsh Government has recently agreed the building of a £6.5m “state of the art” Obstetric complex on the Prince Charles Hospital site which will enable the centralisation of Obstetric services, scheduled to be completed and open in March 2018. This development, in addition to the current investment in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital where “an Acute Medicine” model and a Diagnostic Hub are being developed make Cwm Taf University Health Board an exciting and vibrant place to work.
