Everyone wants to progress within their professional field.

As such, career progression is nurtured and encouraged at Cwm Taf University Health Board, with staff spurred on to reach their full potential.

The health board recognises that fulfilled and supported staff strive to achieve the best medical outcomes for their patients.

Thanks to this supportive ethos, many of the health board’s celebrated staff have quickly ascended the ranks thanks to this career-focused attitude.

Here we look at some of the staff members who have excelled in their profession thanks to Cwm Taf UHB.

Mr Urmil Chalishazar, Associate Specialist ENT / SAS Tutor, Royal Glamorgan Hospital

Since joining Cwm Taf UHB in 2002 to take up the SAS grade role, Mr Chalishazar has seen his career blossom.

After joining on a staff grade job, he went onto achieve extensive experience and qualifications and then progressed to the highest level of staff grade. Thanks to his experience he now acts as an SAS tutor, ensuring his colleagues receive the highest level of expert training.

He added: “When I started here I was working independently but there was always supervision from a consultant. Initially I worked within the Associate Specialist as a staff grade. However I have progressed well and now work as an Associate Specialist, which allows me to work independently.

“Cwm Taf UHB has been extremely supportive of my progression and spurred me on to achieve the very best. I can’t imagine another health board supporting me as much.”

Dr Ruth Alcolado, Deputy Medical Director

After joining Cwm Taf UHB in 200 Ruth Alcolado has seen her career progress.

Dr Alcolado first joined the health board as a consultant and obtained a diversity of roles including postgraduate and undergraduate training leads for the HB, and at a national level whilst taking on leadership opportunities within her specialty.

Following this she was appointed clinical director for medicine and A&E in 2011, and after four years took on a more broad management remit.

Finally in January 2017 she was became deputy medical director. Of her success Dr Alcolado said: “I have been given so many fantastic opportunities while working here. I look forward to seeing how things progress in the coming years.”

Dr Esther Youd, Clinical Director of Pathology

Dr Esther Youd has supported her colleagues’ career progression since joining Cwm Taf UHB – something which has seen her stand out from the crowd.

After joining as a consultant histopathologist seven years ago, her dedication to training has seen her excel within her field acting as the lead for training for histopathology registrars within the department.

Alongside this she has also developed a hugely popular autopsy teaching programme, acted as an educational supervisor for postgraduates and undergraduates, been appointed as an honorary lecturer, acts as an examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists and as an external examiner at Imperial College London.

Dr Youd’s never ending devotion to staff growth and career progression, saw her appointed to the role of Clinical Director five years ago.

Dr Gavin Clague, consultant musculoskeletal radiologist, Royal Glamorgan Hospital

Since joining Cwm Taf UHB in 2013 Dr Clague has extensively expanded his experience in radiology examinations and procedures.

Thanks to the support of his department, along with his own experience, Cwm Taf UHB now offers innovative treatments for multiple musculoskeletal conditions.

His passion for radiology has also encompassed his personal interest in sports. Not only is he interested in sports injury imaging, but all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology including inflammatory arthritis and soft tissue sarcoma which he gets great exposure to during his work.

He said: “Cwm Taf offers excellent support and room for growth, combined with scenic surrounding areas, and fantastic colleagues.

“I can’t imagine working in a more innovative and supportive health board. I firmly believe that Cwm Taf and its doctors are some of the best in Wales.”
