The histopathology department is based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The pathology directorate is the only directorate in Wales fully UKAS accredited to ISO15189 standards.

You will join a complement of 8.5 wte consultants who report general histopathology and diagnostic cytopathology. There are excellent opportunities to develop specialist expertise alongside general reporting and to lead MDTs. A range of specialist interests is welcomed to complement the team including GI pathology, gynae, dermatopathology, head and neck, and breast pathology.

Career development in education, quality improvement, R&D and leadership is strongly supported through the SPA activity and mentorship is provided for all new consultants.

We will shortly be adopting digital histology which is a truly exciting innovation, changing the way we work, and Wales is set to be the first country in the world to go fully digital!
Two registrars are placed in the department from the Wales Deanery.

The autopsy service for the Coroner is provided within the job plan and participation is welcomed but not mandatory. This is a unique arrangement in Wales and has improved the quality of the autopsy service and created excellent job satisfaction. This service provides outstanding training to histopathology registrars, being the centre for ST1 autopsy training and Higher Autopsy Training (CHAT).
